PARTNERING WITH FAMILIES TO SUPPORT READING AT HOME

Our school library loves partnering with families to nurture confident, capable readers. We are always happy to help students choose engaging, “good fit” books to enjoy at home and can recommend titles suited to your child’s interests and reading level.

A “good fit” book is one where:
The child understands most of the words (only 1–2 tricky words per page).
The story makes sense to them.
It matches their interests.
They can read it with growing independence while still feeling successful.

Encouraging your child to read at home — even for just 10–15 minutes — makes a significant difference.

Why reading at home matters:
Builds vocabulary and general knowledge.
Strengthens comprehension and thinking skills.
Improves spelling and writing .
Develops concentration and stamina.
Strengthens speaking and listening skills.
Builds empathy and emotional understanding.
Grows confidence and independence as a learner.

Simple ways to encourage reading at home:
Create a small, cosy reading spot.
Let your child choose books that interest them.
Take turns reading aloud.
Talk about the story — favourite parts, characters, predictions.
Model reading yourself (books, magazines, recipes, newspapers).

If time is limited:
Read together just a few pages each night.
Listen to an audiobook in the car.
Encourage your child to read to a sibling or even a pet.
Read recipes, signs, or shopping lists together — it all counts!

Thank you for partnering with us to foster a love of reading that will last a lifetime.
