See what our students have been up in the Middle/Senior School down on the Unity Farm!
Year 6: The Year 6 students have been working hard maintaining their vegetable gardens during practical lessons. Students are growing a leafy, root and legume vegetable and learning about how to safely use tools and equipment. They can’t wait to pick their lettuce, carrots, beetroots, radishes and snow peas once they’ve reached maturity.
Year 7: The Year 7s are currently studying Poultry Production. They are helping to raise a batch of chicks to Point of Lay. Through their course they are also learning about animal welfare. They have enjoyed having some hands on experiences with the chicks and calves. As well as looking at the different parts of an egg from our school layers.
Year 8: This term we have been learning about the Dairy industry and what is involved in the operations of a dairy farm. We have also tasted some yummy dairy products and are feeding Bingo and Bongo the two dairy calves we are caring for this term. We have also started a vegetable garden and are hoping the plants grow really well to taste them.
Year 9: This term we have been learning about the sheep industry. We have looked at some of the different roles that need to happen on a sheep farm and have been learning how to handle the sheep safely for both students and sheep. We are also learning about wool and what makes a good fleece for a sheep and a farmer.
Year 10: This term we have been learning about a typical Mallee farm and the types of crops that are grown and the machinery that is needed to manage a cropping enterprise effectively. We have also been making bags of chicken feed using different types of gain.
Senior School: The Senior School Ag students have assisted in weighing the pigs to monitor their growth rate. The pigs are putting on a significant daily gain. The pork from these will be available to purchase at the end of this Term. Once again, thank you to SunPork for their continual support to our Agricultural program. The donation of these pigs to the school enterprise allow them to be used in the curriculum for student analysis.
Year 12: The Year 12 students have begun their Sheep investigation 8 week trial. Student’s will administer probiotics to half the mob to see if these make a difference in improving weight gain through improving rumination and sheep health. Thanks to Mark Humphrey from Windella for donating these crossbred lambs.
