A WORD FROM MR PIENAAR (25 JUNE)

Week 9 – The Finish Line is in Sight

As we approach the end of Term 2, there’s a great sense of energy and anticipation across our College. Our final day for the term is Friday 27 June, and we’ll be concluding with a much-loved Unity tradition—our Staff vs Students Netball Match. This friendly yet spirited competition is always a crowd favourite, filled with laughter, teamwork, and a touch of competitive fire. The staff claimed victory last year—will they hold onto the title, or will our students rise to the challenge? Either way, it promises to be a joyful celebration to close the term.

Professional Development Week – Investing in Excellence

While students begin their well-earned break, our dedicated staff will participate in a week of professional development from 30 June to 4 July. We are proud to be hosting the AISSA Southern Regional Conference on the opening day, with keynote speaker Madhavi Nawana Parker, Director of Positive Minds Australia. Madhavi will share valuable insights on the neuroscience of wellbeing and provide evidence-based strategies for building resilience, sustainable wellbeing, and joy in our work.

This week represents more than professional learning—it is a reaffirmation of our calling as educators and carers, focused on growth, renewal, and deepening our shared mission.

The Power of Reading – A Holiday Invitation to Our Students

As students enjoy a slower pace over the holidays, I want to encourage everyone—especially our older learners—to take up a book and rediscover the joy of reading. In today’s digital world, reading for pleasure is becoming less common, yet it remains one of the most powerful habits for personal growth and academic success.

Why is reading so important for every learner?
Reading is not just a school subject—it is a lifelong skill. It enhances our ability to think critically, communicate clearly, and learn independently. Whether we are children, teenagers, or adults, reading enriches our lives in countless ways.

Here are ten compelling reasons to make reading a daily habit:

Mental stimulation – Keeps the brain active and sharp
Stress reduction – Offers escape and promotes relaxation
Knowledge building – Broadens understanding of the world
Vocabulary expansion – Improves expression and confidence
Memory improvement – Strengthens retention and recall
Analytical thinking – Sharpens reasoning and problem-solving
Improved focus – Helps train the mind in a distracted world
Better writing skills – Good reading fosters strong writing
Tranquillity – Brings calm and reflection
Free entertainment – Books offer boundless joy at little or no cost

Let’s make reading a regular part of the holiday routine. A book can take us on an adventure, teach us something new, or simply offer a moment of peace. Whatever the reason—read.

Spiritual Food for the Soul

“Gratitude is the key that unlocks the abundance of blessings in our lives. Let us be grateful for every breath we take, for every opportunity we receive.”

As Scripture reminds us:
“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” – Psalm 136:1

Let us carry hearts of gratitude not only in times of success but in every season. Gratitude transforms our perspective, deepens our relationships, and strengthens our faith.

Wishing all our students and families a restful, safe, and joy-filled holiday. May it be a time to reconnect, reflect, and recharge. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for a vibrant Term 3 on Monday, 21 July.

Blessings
